Managing Access with Azure AD Groups
Design Role-Based Groups
Start with role-based security groups such as Finance-Staff, Finance-Managers, and Finance-Applications to mirror job functions.
Avoid assigning individual users directly to applications; use group-based assignments to simplify reviews.
For privileged operations, create break-glass groups with time-bound access enforced through Azure AD Privileged Identity Management.
Automate Membership Changes
Implement dynamic user groups that leverage attributes like department, office location, or job title to auto-populate membership.
Use access reviews to prompt business owners to re-certify access on a quarterly cadence.
Integrate human resources systems so that offboarding automatically removes users from synced security groups.
Audit and Reporting
Configure Azure AD diagnostic settings to send audit logs to a Log Analytics workspace for long-term retention.
Run the access review reports and export them to CSV for archival after each campaign.
Enable the Enforce Policy Compliance option so that users who do not respond to an access review lose group access until reapproved.
